About us
We who
run Vadmarken’s British Shorthair breeding are Margareta Ernevad and Olle
Jandermark . We live in a century-old apartment in central Malmö. We are both
captivated by cats and that mysteriousness which surrounds those fantastic
creatures. After having been introduced to a fantastically beautiful British
tomcat at a cat show and being privileged to take care of Bokbacken’s Daisy,
our first British Shorthair in 2000, we got the idea of starting our own
breeding.
After we had experienced Daisy’s first delivery we said to ourselves
“no more breeding of cats”, as it involved an emergency Caesarean operation,
uterus inflammation and sleepless nights keeping vigil over the litter with a
feeding bottle handy. However, we
were able to bring the kittens to Daisy during her stay at the surgery. Seeing
her kittens and getting her favourite treat, strawberry yoghurt in the waiting
room was something she seemed to appreciate a lot. In conclusion we had no idea
that being a cat breeder would involve so much hard work.
But as time went by and the kittens grew bigger we began to feel an urge
to experience the whole procedure once again as we were convinced that it
couldn’t possibly be worse. Despite our newly acquired insights into raising
cats we realized that we had a lot more to learn. Thus, we took various courses
e.g. in how to deal with delivery complications, genetics etc. The more we
studied the more curious we got.
We applied for and received our breeding name in 2003 which consists of
the last three letters of our both surnames.
During this time we also bought two new “Brits”, Bokbacken’s Eliza
and Gentle Eros, chocolate coloured and chocolate-white respectively. Before
long we realized that those chocolate coloured cats were to become our passion.
Lately, we have also started breeding colourpointed cats. Above all, in the
colours of chocolate and lilac as well as occasionally other colurs. For the
moment we have three breeding female cats, S*Kastanjeback’s Audrey Hepburn BRI
h as well as two of our own breeding; Endless love BRI b 24 and Honey-Moon BRI h
22, both of which are daugthers of “little” Audrey Hepburn.
At the most we have two litters a year.
Our goal is to breed healthy beautiful kittens with nice temperaments.
In order to minimize the cases of defects and diseases we constantly work
with a certain health program.
We regularly scan our cats for HCM as well as test them for PKD. We also
do our utmost to avoid inbreeding.
HCM is a cruel and insidious disease that can appear even later in life
which means the scanning must be repeated over the years. We are even
considering not to sell kittens to those who do not share our values. Bodil
Helin at S*Kastanjeback’s has been of great help in our choice of breeding
tomcats. We have also had the fortune of using her beautiful tomcats with their
interesting pedigrees; colours and patterns that we appreciate so much. It is a
privilege to get advice from such a competent breeder.
Raising cats, we do not consider a hobby, rather a way of living. Our
cats are part of our family or more correctly, we are part of their family.
Nowadays, we cannot imagine ourselves a life without these wonderful
animals which enrich our lives so much. Through are breeding we have made plenty
of new friends; clients as well as colleague breeders.
